Is another bad loan wave waiting to happen?

Banks and their investors are rejoicing over the potential reduction in stressed loans as corporate bad loan cases are set to get resolved under the time-bound Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). Lenders have also pointed to an improvement in the real sector, which has resulted in fresh slippages of banks reducing in the September quarter.

Indeed, the accretion of bad loans in September quarter was the slowest in almost 10 quarters for banks. Many lenders also showed improvement in bad loan ratios.
However, the big question is: Will this last?
The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Financial Stability Report (FSR) has a warning that this improvement may not really be sustained. One of the best indicators of incipient stress is the movement in special mention accounts (SMA).
Between March and September, SMA-2 loan accounts, cases where principal and interest payments are overdue for more than 60 days, surged by 56%. There is a concurrent drop of 40% in SMA-1 accounts, where payment overdue is more than 30 days.
What this means is that stressed companies still aren’t able to generate enough revenue to honour loan payments.
What is also clear from the adjoining chart is that the improvement in asset quality during October-March last fiscal year was fleeting and merely statistical. Large borrowers are still unable to meet loan repayment commitments and banks are still deeply mired in the bad loan mess.

Dear Compatriots,
I felicitate with all Nigerians, particularly our Christian brothers and sisters, on the occasion of this year’s Christmas day celebration.
The commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ is an important opportunity for us to show love to one another and encourage unity by spending quality time with our friends, families and the less-privileged.
It is also an occasion to draw inspiration from the exemplary lifestyle and teachings of Jesus Christ, who constantly stood for what is right, true and honest.
The Holy Book describes Christmas as a festival of peace, joy, healing, hope and fulfilment. It kindles great expectations in the heart, irrespective of the challenges of the moment.
As we celebrate this Yuletide season, let us devote some time to pray and appreciate the sacrifices of members of our armed services to keep our nation safe and secure.
By the same token, and keeping with the spirit of the season, our gallant troops serving in the frontlines in the fight against insurgency; those wounded, lying in the hospital, as well as civilians who have suffered the brunt of evil and wicked elements these past years, deserve our fervent goodwill and sustained prayers.
The personal fortitude of these individuals will continue to inspire us to victory as we turn the tide against the enemy and annihilate those who work against the unity of our nation.
In this season of hope, let us remember to provide refuge to those who cannot enjoy Christmas at home with their families, or have been driven from their homes by insurgency or violence, particularly the Internally Displaced Persons.

Fuel scarcity: ''Marketers are hoarding petroleum products but we are working to stop this'' NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru, says

In a video posted on social media, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Maikanti Baru, says the current scarcity of petrol is as a result of marketers hoarding the products. According to Baru, in addition to existing supplies on ground, 3 ships are currently unloading 150 million litres of petrol. He said NNPC will push this additional supply out within 3-4 days.

90s rapper, DJ, Pam the Funkstress has died

Legendary female DJ, Pam the Funkstress of the Oakland hip-hop duo the Coup, who also served as Prince's personal DJ during the final months of the music legend's life, has died at the age of 51.
Bay Area radio station KBLX confirmed Warren's death, with the San Francisco Chronicle reporting that Warren died of organ failure on Friday.
The DJ whose real name is Pam Warren was hospitalized recently after undergoing organ transplant surgery.
"The KBLX Family would like to send our love, prayers and condolences to the family and friends of Pam Warren, AKA Pam the Funkstress, The Turntable Queen, who passed away on Friday," the radio station said in a statement. "She was one of the finest DJs on the planet, a true legend, and she was family! Information about public services will be forthcoming. We will miss you Queen."
