Nigerian Lamborghini driver arrested in Singapore for reckless driving? He has been charged with money laundering, drug trafficking

45-year-old Nigerian man Paul Gabriel Amos, who had previously been charged in a United States court for swindling Citibank was charged in a district court, Singapore on Wednesday, October 25 with laundering S$1.7 million.
On October last year, Amos went viral after he was arrested for reckless and dangerous driving.
Amos, who is a Permanent Resident in Singapore and married to a citizen, also faces eight charges under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act.
Amos was prosecuted in a New York district court in 2009 for committing bank and wire fraud, according to a The New York Times report. He was accused of duping Citibank of S$27 million in September 2008 by using documents purportedly signed off by Ethiopian bank officials instructing the bank to wire the sum to accounts controlled by Amos and others around the world. While he was held in the US for a few months, Amos was not convicted.
It was not stated in court whether the money laundering charges Amos faces have any connection to his earlier case in the US, although they concern alleged offences committed around the same time.
One of the charges against Amos allege that he facilitated the transfer of S$987,526.40 into an OCBC account in Singapore in October 2008 so that an individual named Robert Umohette would be able to retain his benefits obtained from a criminal conduct. Who this individual is and what the criminal conduct was are not known.
Towards the end of the same month, Amos also allegedly received stolen money amounting to S$426,995.55, which he stashed in a DBS bank account here. He is also accused of transferring S$300,000 of ill-gotten gains to his Citibank Maxisave account.
Other charges allege that Amos spent S$373,528 on personal expenses, including paying S$31,400 deposit for a BMW car, and paying suppliers and IT consultancy charges.
Amos also faces three counts of traffic offences, including driving without a valid licence and dangerous driving.
On Oct 2 last year, he allegedly drove a blue Lamborghini despite not having a Class 3 driving licence. He is accused of recklessly cutting lanes along the East Coast Parkway that day. Footage of the incident was captured on a dashboard camera in another person’s car and was posted online.
Amos has been released on S$150,000 bail and will appear in court again on Nov 22.
If found guilty of money laundering, he could face up to 10 years in jail, or a fine of up to S$500,000 per charge, or both.
If convicted of dangerous driving, he could face a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of up to S$5,000, or both. And for driving without a proper license, he could face a maximum of three months’ in jail or a fine not exceeding S$1,000.

Very slim women and yo-yo dieters have a 30% higher risk of suffering early menopause

Very slim women are much more likely to experience an early menopause, research has found.
Those who are underweight have a 30 percent higher chance risk of hitting the menopause before they are 45.
The study of 80,000 women also found that the risk trebled if they were underweight and lost one and a half stone on three separate occasions.
One theory is that slim women have lower levels of the sex hormone estrogen, which is produced by fat tissue.
Researchers from the University of Massachusetts, in Boston, looked at 78,759 women aged 25 to 42.
Underweight was classified as having a BMI of less than 18.5 – which is equivalent to being 5ft 5in tall and weighing 8 stone or less.
Women who had been underweight at any age had a 30 percent higher risk of early menopause compared to those of normal weights.
By contrast, women who were overweight – with a BMI of between 25 to 30 – had a 30 percent lower odds of hitting the menopause early.
And underweight women who had lost 20lbs – 9 kilos – on three separate occasions between the ages of 18 to 30 had a 2.4 times higher risk.
The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, said there were 'important implications' for underweight women and their fertility may start to decline earlier than expected.

Man bags 18 months imprisonment for calling Police officer 'vampire'

28 year old James Linyada has been convicted and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for proposing violence by a Blantyre Third Grade Magistrate Court in southern Malawi.

Linyada was arrested on October 20 after he stopped a female Police Constable Happy Kwisongole who was going home from work, and called her a 'bloodsucker' which made people carry various weapons such as stones, sticks and burglar bars ready to deal with the officer.

It took the intervention of her landlord who pleaded with the crowd to disperse as the lady was not a blood sucker but a Police officer at Kabula.

Linyada pleaded guilty to the charge of proposing violence contrary to section 87 (1)(a) of the penal code. Passing the sentence Third Grade Magistrate Catherine Magwira said though the accused was a first offender, the offence he committed is serious.
"His behavior was very bad. He wanted the angry people to take away the life of an innocent police officer. She said the court could not condone such bad behaviour within the society. It is for this reason that the accused should be given a custodial sentence to remove him from the society so that people should live in peace," Magwira said.

The magistrate then sentenced Linyada to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour without an option of a fine.

It's my birthday and I'll flash if I want to!

She frequents the social scene in increasingly daring ensembles.
So Tallia Storm was naturally determined to push the scantily-clad boundaries as she celebrated her 19th birthday at London's Bunga Bunga restaurant and bar alongside a bevy of celebrity friends on Wednesday evening.
The songstress opted to go braless beneath a skin-tight lace T-shirt, tucked into a thigh-skimming denim mini while just about protecting her modesty with the addition of a teal velvet jacket while boosting her height with staggering platforms.
Tallia was looking incredible in her ensemble, in which she marred a mish mash of styles to create the show-stopping and super quirky vibes.
The sheer top would have been a minimal base to the garish look had she not gone braless underneath - meaning her perky assets took centre stage.

The Best Personal Loans for People with Bad Credit

These days, if you find yourself with an unexpected expense you can’t cover and you happen to have less than perfect credit, there are a few ways to get money. The question is which one is the best for you? Read on to learn more about the best personal loans for people with bad credit.

Payday Loans: Personal Loans Based on Your Income

Available at local loan stores and online, these personal loans are quick, convenient and available even for people with poor or bad credit. They’re structured to be repaid on your next pay day usually within two weeks of when you get funded. The problem with payday loans happens when you can’t repay the loan in full within that first two week period. If that happens, prepare to be hit with some steep interest rates. Sometimes these rates can amount to $20-$30 per hundred borrowed every two weeks. Many people end up rolling over their payday loans 10 times before they’re finally able to repay them. This practice can mean you end up paying more in interest than the principal of the loan so be sure to examine the pros and cons of payday loans before you sign on the dotted line.

Pawn Loans: Bad Credit, No Problem

A loan from a pawn shop is secured by the valuables you pawn such as jewelry, electronics, tools, and musical instruments so whether you have good or bad credit has no effect. You bring your items to the pawn shop; they will appraise them and base your loan amount on the value of the items you’re pawning. Keep in mind, a pawn shop will not loan you the full value of your items. Pawn shop interest rates are governed by the individual states but again, they’re not cheap. The dangerous thing about pawn loans is if, for some reason, you’re unable to redeem your items or pay the interest to roll over the loan to the next month, you will lose your valuables. The upside of a personal loan from a pawn shop is besides generating almost immediate cash, once you redeem your item your obligation to the pawn shop ends.

Car Title Loans: Secured by Your Car

Similar to pawn shop loans, auto title loans are secured by your vehicle whether it’s a car, motorcycle, RV or boat. Important Note: While poor or bad credit won’t affect you here, you must own your vehicle outright and have a clear title to get one of these loans. The emergence of car title loan stores on almost every corner is due in part to the way these loans are structured. Car title loans generally give you 6 months to repay the loan with the first few payments going almost entirely to interest. In other words, they get their money first before you start paying down the principal. While you get to keep using your vehicle while you pay off the loan, if you’re unable to make the minimum payment or settle the loan within the allotted time, you may lose your car. Like pawn shop loans, auto title loan stores are not going to loan you the true value of your vehicle.

Signature Loans: A True Personal Loan for People with Bad Credit

These short-term, personal loans are unsecured and available at both local loan stores and online lenders for people with less than perfect credit or in some cases, bad credit. Short-term loans are usually scheduled to be repaid within 6 to 12 months and while the interest rates can be steep, there’s no penalty for early repayment. These loans seem to be best managed when repaid within about 5 payments. This saves the borrower a ton of interest. While loan amounts are not as high as with auto title loans, many lenders will go up to $5,000 if you qualify. For most people, that’s enough to cover any unexpected expense or emergency. Besides being unsecured and giving you payment flexibility, one of the pluses of short-term, signature loans is that they’re confidential. Only you and the lender know your business. If you go the online route, you want to look for a lender that is affiliated with the Online Lenders Alliance or OLA.
Why people take out these different personal loans varies from sudden car repairs to unexpected medical expenses to preventing multiple overdraft fees. It’s important to do your research to learn which kind of loan is best for you. In the end, you should always consider whether the loan you take out will cost more than it’s worth.

The Pitfalls of the Payday Loan Cycle

Payday loans seem harmless enough. They are short-term, personal loans designed to help you with an unexpected expense such as a car repair or medical bill. However, if you’re not able to repay the loan and interest on your next payday as promised, it’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of paying only interest every pay day. The trick with payday loans is that unless you can repay the entire loan including the interest due on the date agreed, the only choice you have is to roll over the loan, paying only the interest. The payday loan company will not allow you to pay anything toward the principal, the base amount of your loan. They will only accept an interest payment that lets you roll over the loan with the hope that you can pay off the entire loan plus interest on your next pay day. As you can imagine, paying the loan company interest every pay day, but never reducing the initial amount you borrowed only continues to take money out of your pocket and gets you no closer to paying off the full loan. This is what is referred to as the payday loan cycle and it happens to most people who take out payday loans.

Payday Loans on the Rise

The reluctance of banks and credit unions to lend to people with less than perfect credit has given rise to payday loan stores on virtually every corner adding to this vicious cycle. And these loans aren’t cheap; another reason for the explosion of storefront lenders. When you stop and look at the numbers, you’ll see that payday loan stores are making a tidy profit. The average finance charge ranges from 15 to 30 percent of the principal, the base amount you borrowed. Of course, since it’s 15 to 30 percent over a few weeks, that is comparable to an 800% annual percentage rate. A steep price to pay for a few hundred dollars to help you out of a jam.

Bank Fees Usually Follow Payday Loans

The worst part comes when the people who borrow from payday lenders can’t repay their loans as scheduled. This leads to individuals with a negative checking account already suffering from financial hardships being hit with bank non-sufficient funds (NSF) and other fees for bounced checks they wrote to the lender, putting them deeper in the hole than when they began. Even if an individual manages to pay off their payday loan on schedule, they often find that they can’t pay their expenses and end up taking out a new loan, and the cycle of debt continues.

Getting Out of the Payday Loan Cycle

There are ways to get the money you need without taking out a payday loan. One alternative is to ask for a cash advance on your next paycheck from your employer. Many companies will make an interest-free loan available to their employees in case of emergencies. You can’t go to this well more than a couple of times and you need to truly be in crisis, but since most companies prefer employees who are able to focus on their jobs instead of on their personal problems, you’ve got a good shot at getting the money you need.
Bringing items of value to a pawn shop to collateralize a loan is another way to generate cash without getting a payday loan. Pawn shops lend cash for jewelry, electronics, tools, and more. However, pawn shops can be as slippery a slope as payday loans. The danger with pawn shops is if you’re unable to pay the interest or redeem the items on the specified date, you may end up losing your valuables. The rates of pawn shops are governed independently by each state, but they are not cheap. The upside of pawning items is that once you’ve redeemed your valuable or lost them to the pawn shop, the contract is over and there are no additional fees unlike with payday loans.

Better Than a Payday Loan

Instead of a payday loan, perhaps a better option is to take out a signature installment loan from an Internet-based lender. With this kind of short-term loan, there’s no collateral, you only pay interest while you have the loan out, and there’s never a penalty for early repayment. Most people pay back their signature loans sooner than the full term of the loan saving them a ton on interest.
Emergencies happen to everyone. However, the best thing you can do is to be prepared by having an emergency fund in place. Barring that, try to opt for one of the alternatives instead of a payday loan.

8 Steps to Improve Your Credit Score

In order to improve your credit score, you must first understand what is a credit score and the underlying factors that go into a credit score. These factors have different weights attached to each with some factors being more significant than others. These factors and weights are:
  1. Payment History 35%
  2. Amount Owed 30%
  3. Credit History 15%
  4. Credit Mix 10%
  5. New Credit 10%
By understanding what is actually involved in your credit score, you can create a better plan of attack to improve your credit score.

1. Credit Utilization

The first step is to reduce your credit utilization. Credit utilization is just that: how much of your available credit you use. In general, you should keep your credit utilization to no more than 25% of what’s available to you. Put simply, if your credit card limit is $1,000, your balance on that card should be no greater than $250. This ratio is true for all your revolving credit accounts. It’s easier said than done but having better credit utilization ratios will improve your credit score drastically.

2. Credit Limits

Take a look at your existing cards for credit limits. Don’t use cards that don’t report credit limits. If your card does not specify a limit, the credit reporting bureaus will assume that the limit is the highest balance ever carried on the card. The result is a possible overestimation of how much credit you are using and that can mean a lower credit score.

3. Authorized Users

Becoming an authorized user on someone else’s credit card will benefit your credit rating. All the positive ratings for that account will be automatically added to your credit score. If you can, in fact, get added to someone else’s credit account in good standing, try to get added to one that’s been established for a while as a long credit history will also improve your score. Just keep in mind the credit history for the credit card for any derogatory remarks or if there’s an existing high credit utilization since it can do more harm than good!

4. Forgiveness

If you’ve had payment problems in the past but are currently in good standing, ask your creditor to remove the negative notations on your account. Given that your account is now current, they might just do it.

5. Student Loans

If you’ve missed some of your student loan payments or even if you’ve defaulted, you can get your Sallie-Mae loan accounts back on track with just 12 consecutive payments. The message here is that a payment arrangement is always better than a charge-off a default.

6. Correct Errors

Be vigilant in periodically reviewing your credit reports and report any errors to the credit bureau that provided the report. Under the law, you get one free report from each of the three bureaus each year. Visit www.annualreports.com to request your free reports.

7. Dispute Negative Entries

The older a debt, the more difficult it will be to verify and, therefore, more likely to be removed by the credit reporting bureaus. Review your credit reports and use the form on the websites of the three major credit reporting bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) to submit an official dispute. You might just get some old negative notations eliminated.

8. Avoid Closing Accounts

Closing credit card accounts can reduce your creditworthiness and as a result, may increase your credit utilization ratio. If you must close accounts, close only newer accounts. Older accounts reflect better on your credit score.
The best thing you can do for your credit score is to protect it from the start. Unfortunately, unemployment due to losing your job and other crises can impact whether or not you can pay your bills. If that happens, stay focused and keep your end game—an improved credit score—in mind
