The couple's pre-wedding dinner held in Kano yesterday evening and it was attended by friends and family members.
The first leg of their wedding proper will take place on Thursday March 15th in Kano.

Fire destroys over 600 shops in Bida market

Over 600 shops at the old market in Bida in Niger state were destroyed by fire on Thursday night.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire, which started at about 8.30 p.m. destroyed goods and other property in the old market. Witnesses said firemen from the Bida Fire Service and Federal Polytechnic Fire Service could not access the burnt section of the market as some shops were still in flames.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.  Alhaji Mohammad Badugu, the Chairman, Bida Local Government said that the entire market was affected by the fire.

“We are expecting more fire-fighting vehicles from Minna as our neighbouring local government’s fire-fighting engines are not in good condition,” Bagudu said. He confirmed that the Bida fire service and Federal Polytechnic fire service, the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and good Samaritans rallied to extinguish the fire.

According to the chairman, all the 600 shops in the old market were completely burnt. He listed goods destroyed to include clothes, motorcycles, building materials, bags of maize, beans, rice, palm oil and poultry products.

He expressed shock at the development, promising that the council would try to rebuild the market without much delay. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Dibal Yakadi, confirmed the incidence.  “My Area Commander is leading police personnel deployed to maintain security of lives and property in the market,’’ Yakadi said.

He explained that the police were there to prevent miscreants from stealing and ensure law and order in the market.

Woman accused of poisoning her look-alike with cheese cake so she could steal her identity

A Brooklyn woman has been accused of attempted murder after allegedly trying to poison a look-alike with tainted cheesecake and steal her identity, authorities said.

Viktoria Nasyrova, a 42-year-old Russian native, has been indicted on several charges, including attempted murder and burglary. Prosecutors on Wednesday said she tried poisoning a woman who resembled her back in 2016 by using a tranquilizer-laced cheesecake as part of a "twisted" scheme to stage her suicide.

Viktoria's plan was to kill the woman who looks like her, then make it look like she (Viktoria) was dead. She would then steal her dead look-alike's identity and begin to live life as her. Nasyrova allegedly visited the woman at her home in Queens and offered her the cake as a gift. The woman, 35 at the time, took a slice of the cake and immediately began to feel sick, according to a statement by the Queens District Attorney’s office.

"Before passing out, the woman's last memory is of seeing the defendant sitting beside her inside her home," according to the District Attorney's office statement. "The following day, the victim's friend discovered her unconscious in her bed, dressed in lingerie with pills scattered around her body -- as if the woman had attempted to kill herself."

Fortunately, the victim, named Olga, survived, but she later realized that her passport and employment documents, along with a gold ring and cash, and a few other valuables were missing.

Law enforcement agents with the Department of Homeland Security tested the cheesecake and confirmed it was laced with the Russian tranquilizer Phenazepan. The pills contained the same drug as well, District Attorney Richard Brown said.

The Queens District Attorney’s office said in the statement that Viktoria could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. She's next due in court May 25.

"This is a bizarre and twisted crime that could have resulted in the death of a Queens woman, whose only fault was that she shared similar features with the defendant,” the statement said. "The victim and the defendant resembled one another -- both have dark hair, the same skin complexion and speak Russian."

Nasyrova, first arrested in March 2017, was indicted Wednesday on 10 separate charges, including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree attempted assault, the Queens District Attorney’s office said. She is scheduled to re-appear in court May 25.Nasyrova also is accused of drugging and killing a woman in her native country before fleeing to New York. Her ex-boyfriend who had a dog named Julie also revealed that she killed his dog on the dog's birthday. the ex also claimed she offered him a drink and he passed out for 2 days. When he woke up, she had stolen some of his items. Two other men in New York say she drugged them and stole from them.  She denied those charges in the CBS interview conducted in prison.

5 Boko Haram terrorists neutralized and several others wounded by Nigerian Army's 'Operation Deep Punch'

Today, Col Onyema Nwachukwu the Deputy Director Public Relations of operation Lafiya Dole 'Deep Punch' issued a statement giving progess report on the activities of the command.

According to him, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE currently on Operation DEEP PUNCH II which is aimed at clearance of the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists within Sambisa forest and Lake Chad basin general area, have continued to record successes.

In his words
'The troops have been launching offensive operations on suspected hideouts of the terrorists that kept the insurgents on the run. Two days ago, on Thursday 22nd February 2018, suspected Boko Harm terrorists attempting to escape through one of the blocking positions of the troops, paid dearly as quite a number of them were neutralized. In an ambush that lasted for less than 20 minutes near Sabil Huda, the troops recovered a G3 Rifle magazine, 1 Life jacket, a Light Machine Gun metal link, 4 rounds of anti-Aircraft ammunition, 4 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 3 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition. Unfortunately, 2 soldiers were injured in the process'.

They have since been evacuated by the Nigerian Air Force and are responding to treatment. Buoyed with the success and information obtained, the troops yesterday Friday 23rd February 2018, embarked on offensive operations on suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideout ahead of Camp Zairo within Sambisa forest. Unfortunately however, they encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that affected one of their Armoured Fighting Vehicle. Undeterred, they continued with the offensive action in which they cleared suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideout around Parisu. During the clearance, they also neutralized 5 Boko Haram terrorists and wounded several others.

The troops recovered a 122 millimetre gun mounted on a truck that also has an Anti-aircraft gun on it, 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade, 1 Grenade Revolver, 7 Mortar Bombs and other assorted weapons. While advancing, the troops also encountered and recovered 2 Toyota Hilux vehicles, 3 Power generating sets, 2 Motorcycles, additional Mortar bombs, Gas cylinders and the Boko Haram terrorists Metal fabrication factory replete with varying machines for welding and making IEDs. While on the offensive in other parts, the troops of 151 Battalion in conjunction . with 7 Division Support Group also embarked on clearance offensive against Boko Haram terrorists hideouts around Frigi crossing point and Izza general area.

The gallant troops discovered and destroyed 9 Boko Haram terrorists hideouts. Although the number of Boko Haram terrorists neutralized could not be ascertained, it is believed to be quite sizeable, while one of their leaders was captured. The troops rescued an old man and 3 elderly women in one of the hideouts. The troops also recovered 1 Motorcycle with 10 Bicycle tyres, a bicycle, 3 Boko Haram flags, 1 Solar panel, 5 drums of Guinea corn, 2 medium size mattresses, 2 Grinding machines, 3 bags of metal scraps, 2 Motorcycle tyres and 2 underground food Storages.

They also recovered one AK-47 Rifle Magazine, 1 dummy Rifle, a round of 12.7mm ammunition, 12 empty cases of 7.62mm ammunition, 2 bicycles, large quantity of IED making materials and a tool box. The Air Task Force of Operation LAFIYA DOLE provided air cover for the Land troops throughout the conduct of the operations. Indian state offers FREE breast implants to poor women

Poor women in a southern Indian state have been offered free breast surgeries, including implants, for both aesthetic or medical reasons.

The Tamil Nadu state government launched the new scheme last week at a state-run clinic in its capital Chennai, with priority given to the poorest women there.  Authorities have promised to soon expand the free service to other districts of the state.

According to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, about 33,000 breast augmentation surgeries were carried out in India in 2016. At private hospitals, a procedure costs 2,300 to 3,800 U.S. dollars, which is almost a year’s wage for most Indians.

Vijayabaskar, the state’s health minister, said the scheme aims to stop people opting for dangerous methods of breast reconstruction or taking out huge loans for it.  “If a poor woman desires to look beautiful, we will support her financially,” he told AFP.

According to the clinic, some of its patients seek breast reduction to alleviate shoulder and back pain, while some want to augment or shrink their breasts for aesthetic reasons.  Tamil Nadu is known for its populist schemes, which have previously included free food canteens and providing wedding jewelry and venues to the poor.

Subway Rider Stabs Creep After He Masturbated In Front Of Her

A gutsy Brooklyn woman turned the tables on a serial subway masturbator early Friday, stabbing the sicko with his own switchblade during a wild brawl aboard the R train.

Oft-arrested suspect Reggie Frank suffered wounds to the chest and arm after targeting the tired woman as she headed home to Brooklyn after a long night at work, cops and family members said.

The 42-year-old victim escaped unharmed, although she was physically and emotionally wiped out after gaining the upper hand against her assailant.

“She’s been sleeping more than anything else,” the woman’s sister told the Daily News. “I am beside myself. How would it make you feel if that was your sibling?”

The terrifying encounter began when the victim fell asleep aboard the Bay Ridge-bound subway — and awoke to find the 47-year-old man masturbating in front of her, police said.

When the woman screamed, Frank zapped her in the face with pepper spray and pulled the deadly folding knife from his pocket, cops said.

He lunged at her with the blade when the train stopped at the 36th St. station in Sunset Park around 2 a.m., with the woman dodging the knife as she fought for her life.

Their tussle spilled onto the platform, where she gained control of the weapon and stabbed Frank in the arm and chest, cops said. She also suffered cuts to her hands that required 15 stitches.

“There was someone on the platform who helped her,” said the woman’s sister.

The victim, through her nephew, declined to comment.

During Frank’s arraignment, his lawyer, William O. Fowlkes, assured the court that it was the woman, not his client, who was the aggressor.

“My client was attacked,” Fowlkes said. He speculated that the woman became startled by Frank, who works for a moving company, and became violent.

“Maybe she woke up and thought he was coming for her purse,” he said. “She saw a guy a little too close.”

Frank’s criminal history includes more than 20 prior arrests, including two within three weeks in 2015 for masturbating in front of women riding the subway trains.

He was also busted twice in 2006 for exposing himself in the Brooklyn subways — including one case where a witness fell to the tracks “in a state of uncontrollable laughter (and) suffered a fractured skull,” court documents said.

In February 2006, he attacked a woman who rejected his sexual advances.

He was accused of assault, weapon possession and public lewdness in the latest attack, police said.
